CHICAGO CHIQUITO

January 20th – Friday, March 3, 2023

Opening reception: Friday, January 20th, 2023; 7-10pm

Chicago Chiquito is a photography exhibition examining the intergenerational immigrant experience in the United States. Presented by Gustavo Herrera Yepez, the exhibition features the work of seven visual artists exploring themes of family, migration, identity, and mental health.

The title of the exhibition, which translates to “little Chicago”, makes reference to the nickname of La Haciendita, a town in Guanajuato, Mexico whose residents have migrated to Chicago for decades. Using family archival and digital photography, textiles, and installations, the exhibition centers on the experiences of the Yepez and the Herreras, two families from La Haciendita who migrated to the city in the 1960s amid declining economic opportunities in Mexico.

Through their work, the artists explore the idea of home, highlighting the impacts of living between borders. More than an exhibition, Chicago Chiquito is a celebration of family, photography, and a platform for connecting and sharing history.
